Samling Masterclass

“Through Samling Academy we are setting new standards in classical singing and piano accompaniment in the North East and our success will be measured when, in future years, its participants successfully audition for our Masterclass programme as young professional artists. This is incredibly exciting and rewarding, thanks to the vision of Gillian Dickinson Trust who have believed in our work and supported it so generously over the years.”

Gillian Dickinson’s grant has enabled Hexham-based Samling to consolidate its work as an international centre of excellence for classical singing and piano accompaniment. Samling has been able to develop a unique model in musical education creating a ‘virtuous circle’ from its ‘Masterclass Programme’ for young professional singers and pianists back into universities and schools in the North East through ‘Samling Academy’.

This new initiative for the charity, working in partnership with Newcastle and Durham Universities and Sage Gateshead Young Musicians’ programme, has helped create a conservatoire standard environment where none existed, affording performance opportunities to young people in the region with the potential to study at Music College and have careers as classical musicians.

Samling’s Masterclass programme is an intensive residential programme led by world-class artists, teachers and experts and attracts outstanding young artists from around the world. There are now over 250 ‘Samling Scholars’ and many forge impressive international careers and see their work with Samling as their springboard and inspiration. Samling brings to the North East the very best artists and teachers and stages regular concerts and masterclasses at Sage Gateshead, building audiences for classical music.

Through its Academy, Samling has worked with young people aged 14 -21 at an earlier stage in their musical development. Through intensive weekends in the Autumn term and some ‘development’ sessions during the year, the charity has enabled young people who are from the North East or who come here to study, to have access to some of the best mentors from the extensive network of world class artists and teachers who have been associated with Samling over the past 18 years.

These young people have now put into practice what they have learned in performances both in concert and as the cast in a fully staged opera. Benjamin Britten’s Albert Herring saw Samling’s work come ‘full circle’, as it was led and directed by its Scholars. The production, which was presented in Saltburn Community Theatre, where most of the rehearsals took place, and at Sage Gateshead, had near-capacity audiences and was featured in BBC Radio 3’s In Tune programme.
